Black Hills Energy supports Cañon City Police Department K-9 Unit

We are committed to the values of safety and community. These two are often connected, but sometimes they’re also leashed to a furry protector.

Recently, we proudly supported the Cañon City Police Department (CCPD) with a donation to help their growing K‑9 Unit. Formed in 2014, the K-9 Unit was funded entirely by donations from Cañon City residents. Over a decade later the unit is still providing service to the community. Our donation is an investment that will strengthen an important public safety resource that benefits people throughout Fremont County.

On March 5, Natalie Falbo and John Vigil from our Public Affairs team visited the CCPD to meet the department’s K‑9 teams and learn more about the work they do to protect residents. Chief John Schick welcomed us and shared a certificate of appreciation that included the department’s new 3‑D K‑9 Unit patch. This was more than just a thoughtful gesture — it’s a symbol of the partnership between our organizations, and our collective commitment to improving the communities we serve.

We also had the chance to see the K‑9 teams in action. Officers Austin Modlin and Robert Holbrook introduced their canine partners, Ares and Radar, and demonstrated some of the specialized skills these highly trained dogs bring to the department. Their work plays a critical role in search operations, narcotics detection, and providing officer safety during high‑risk situations. They’re very good dogs who do very important work.

Chief Schick shared his gratitude, noting that support from community partners like Black Hills Energy helps strengthen the department’s ability to serve Cañon City effectively. “The support from the Black Hills Energy Foundation reflects the strong community partnerships that make our work possible,” he said. “Their investment in our K 9 Unit directly enhances our ability to protect and serve the people of Cañon City.”

A successful K-9 unit needs specialized tools and training, and this donation will help provide these teams with everything they need to keep the community safe.

“At Black Hills Energy, we believe strong communities are built through meaningful partnerships. Supporting the Cañon City Police Department’s K 9 Unit is a way for us to give back to the officers and K-9 teams who work every day to keep our community safe,” John Vigil said. “We’re proud to stand alongside CCPD and grateful for their service.”

We are committed to investing in initiatives that promote safety, well‑being and strong community partnerships. Supporting the CCPD K‑9 Unit is one way we can contribute to a safer, more resilient region, and we’re honored to be a part of their important work.

Safety is one of our top priorities, and we’re grateful to everyone who helps make our communities safer — even those with four paws.
